For a young adolescent, David Curry has a lot to contend with. He loves and fears Reuben, his troubled father. His older brother, Ty, is turning into someone David doesn't know anymore -- or trust. And his mom is struggling to hold everything together.

But then David meets Mr. Moses, an elderly man who tells him that dreams are the key to understanding reality. And with Mr. Moses's gift of dreams, David begins to see the world through his father's eyes.

3 stars Dream Bearer: Walter Dean Myers
Dream Bearer is a book written by Walter Dean Myers and takes place in Harlem where David Curry does not have an easy life with his 17-year-old brother, Tyrone, dealing with his emotionally disturbed father, Reuben, who is unpredictable at times, and his mother, who is working on a plan to make their neighborhood into a homeless shelter. Sessi’s family, David’s friend, is applying for American citizenship and his other friend, Loren talks to him about his worries. Tyrone, angry and rebellious, begins hanging out with the wrong crowd, catches the interest of the police, goes into a debt of over 400 dollars for gambling, disappears for many days, and causes his family to think that he is involved with drugs. Trying to cope with and understand his life, David meets a homeless man named Littlejohn Moses in the park one day while playing basketball and finds out that this man is over 300-years-old and is a “dream bearer” who wants to give another person his dreams. Little does David know that this man is going to help his and his father understand each other through the dreams that the man provides to him. I believe this story is an insight to the urban world of drugs, gambling, gangs, and mental illnesses that leaves you crying in the end.
