Winter in the East Anglian village of Fenchurch St Paul can be harsh. First, two bell-ringers are stricken with 'flu, disrupting the vicar's plans for the holiday season. Then, when Sir Henry Thorpe dies and the grave diggers open the family grave, they find another body - only this one has been buried without ceremony.
When man-about-town and amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey and his faithful manservant Bunter find themselves stranded in the remote village, they are inexorably drawn into a series of intriguing incidents.
What is the identity of the grotesquely disfigured corpse! Who murdered him and why? Perhaps the Fenchurch bells hold the answers...
